Edisto Island Slave Cabin

The Edisto Island Historic Preservation Society donated this slave cabin from the Point of Pines Plantation to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, which will open on Washington’s National Mall in 2015. This important piece of history was moved from the island, where it headed north to be seen by millions of visitors to the Smithsonian’s newest museum.
It was taken down board by board, catalogued and numbered, stacked, wrapped and loaded onto a flatbed trailer for its trip to Washington to be reassembled as the centerpiece of the new museum. Modern additions like the tin roof and metal nails will be replaced. The rest will be transported to a restoration facility in Virginia before being rebuilt inside the museum.
